Yet, the debate goes on as it respects the legalization of marijuana and all drugs for that matter. Should marijuana be legalized? Should it be legalized only for those who have conditions for which marijuana can be effective? Ironically, doctors prescribe narcotics for acute symptoms of pain or coughing. Yet, marijuana is a drug that is not physical addictive but has caused a great deal of controversy. It is likely that the controversy is tied to the 1960s when marijuana would come into vogue once again. Since that time, it has been a first drug of choice for young drug experimenters. It is considered a "gateway" drug and is rampant in the United States. An illegal substance, it is sold on the black market and it is said to have gotten stronger and stronger over the years. With an out of control underground industry, should marijuana be legalized? There are reasons to legalize the substance but there are reasons not to, and these need to be examined. Further, based on the same premise, should other drugs be legalized? These questions loom over a society that wrestles with a myriad of questions about substance use and abuse. First, there are good reasons why marijuana should be legalized for adults who have certain conditions. There are in fact indications that marijuana is used to reduce the pain that comes from cancer and to reduce nausea from chemotherapy (Ogborne, Smart and Adlaf 1685). It has always been known to be useful in mitigating the wasting syndrome of AIDS, as well as for the treatment of glaucoma, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis as well as to treat a variety of other symptoms and disorders (1685). ...
