It is a comedy and a love story told only as Shakespeare could tell the tale. The overall tone of the play is one of attitudes toward love and marriage. One of the plots of the play is the relationship between Beatrice and Benedick. One must analyze the development of this relationship in order to understand the meaning of the play, which is that true love must develop slowly. In "Much Ado About Nothing" the love existing between Beatrice and Benedick was slow in developing. Because of this, the love existing between Beatrice and Benedick appears to be a more substantial love than the love between the other characters in the tale. In fact, their love was the proverbial true love that fits the textbook definition of the tern. Benedick is more in love is more in love with Beatrice than others who constantly profess their supposed love are in love. Benedick loves Beatrice, yet he is not one to frivolously use the term. When Benedick finally says he loves Beatrice, he means it with a true conviction. In "Much Ado About Nothing" Claudio and Hero were in love, as were Benedick and Beatrice, but Benedick and Beatrice did not admit their love at first. They grew to love each other out of knowing each other and a familiarity with each other. In fact, their similar personalities brought them together. They ended up being perfect for each other. This is the way that love should develop. It should be a slow and enduring emotion; one that evolves as the people get to know each other. ...
