Henry had to contend with both political and personal issues that were oftentimes in juxtaposition such as a gift that was a faux pas, friends who became traitors, and his marriage. In the first Act, Henry is given a gift by the ambassador of France. It is because of this gift of tennis balls that Henry takes a personal stake in taking over France, which should only have been a political move. Henry has outgrown his playfulness since he has become king. The tennis balls that were given to him as a gift are more of an insult than they are a prize or a pleasantry. He immediately resorts by saying, "When we have marchd our rackets to these balls, We will , France, by Gods grace, play a set Shall strike his fathers crown into the hazard" (1.2.262-264). In a manner of speaking, Henry will take the crown from the king when he wins the battle for the kingdom. When Henry says that he will thank him, he is being facetious, not serious. In fact, the manner in which he plans to "thank him" is by taking France from its king. When Henry was younger, he was wilder, but now that he has become the king, he has given up the ways of his youth. He is no longer the innocent, playful youth.
