Although women are now in positions of power in the professional arena, social arena, religious arena, and in politics; their presence in those areas are challenged every day by the sexism which is prevalent in the mass media coverage. The portrayal of women in the media to include magazines, newspapers, on billboards and on TV is one of the "perfect" woman. The "perfect" woman is shown as a woman whose height and weight are at the very least proportionate. More than that, women are shown as slim, beautiful, non-threatening - almost submissive, and with only average intelligence. The perception of women as displayed in the media is not the reality. Real women are not extremely thin, have average looks, welcome a challenge and are intelligent. The effect of the mass media on the self esteem of young girls and teenagers is detrimental to their health. The unreal portrayal of women in the mass media has been linked to eating disorders in young girls, teenagers and even older women. Entire courses are now being taught in the areas of self-image and self-esteem in an effort to counter the unhealthy effects of the representation of women in the mass media. Social Changes and the View of Women At the turn of the century, very few women worked outside of their own home. Many women actually were very intelligent and worked hard to maintain a home for their family, balance a household budget, assist in the education of their children, and provide limited health care to family and friends. The women who worked outside of the home became famous, perhaps as much for the oddity of their presence in the working world of the men, as for their achievements.
