Discussion It takes a special kind of person to join the military, and the reasons for doing so are as individual as the service personnel themselves. Some see the military as a steppingstone to a better education. Others relish the training that is available, while still others simply feel they want to give something back to their country. But over and above those who volunteer and serve as enlisted personnel, there are the officers. A person who wants to join the military is already somewhat out of the ordinary; if he or she wants to focus narrowly on becoming a commissioned officer, they become more unusual still. Why do I want to be a military officer? The student will have to answer that for himself, since there is no way to generalize this to encompass everyones hopes and dreams. But one thing to keep in mind is that as an officer, the person will have far more responsibility and the accompanying pressure than he would if he chose to remain enlisted. He will be responsible not only for his own duties, but for the performance of the troops he leads-if they do something wrong, the blame will fall on him, not them. He is also responsible for their welfare, and in a combat situation, their lives. It might be fair to say that someone who wants to become an officer has already considered the military and what it offers and decided that the challenge of simply joining is not enough. They want to take on the additional responsibility that becoming an officer entails. This is not easy, since part of the job involves motivating troops, which is arguably one of the most difficult tasks anyone can ever face. But it is up to an officer to lead his troops so ...
