have presented new and difficult areas for this agency. History The Secret Service, once known as the "Uniformed Division," actually began protection of the White House in 1860. According to Mark (2000), after the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, Congress directed the Secret Service to protect the President of the United States. Two full-time agents were assigned to the President and two operatives were assigned to the White House Detail. In 1908 Congress expanded the duties of the agency to also protect the President-elect, and in 1917 authorized protection of the presidents immediate family and made threats against the President of the United States a federal crime. In 1922 President |Harding established a White House Police Force in addition to the Service. In 1930 an intruder managed to gain unauthorized entrance to the White House during the presidency of Herbert Hoover. The President suggested the White House Police and the Secret Service combine, with the Service directed to exclusively control presidential protection. Congress complied and placed the supervision of the White House Police under the direction of the Chief of the Secret Service. In 1997, Congressional legislation limited Secret Service protection to former presidents for not more than 10 years after leaving office; children of former presidents would be protected until age 16. Major Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, and their spouses are also afforded protection 120 days before a Presidential election. According to Thurman (2000), the Secret Service has about 2,500 special agents and almost 1,100 uniformed officers. More than 200 new agents are being recruited to cope with the growing threat of terrorism and increased presidential exposure at home and abroad.
