It is this feeling of control that eating or not eating gives back some form of psychologically reinforcing belief that they are in charge of at least one thing in their life. Many approaches toward treating eating disorders have been tried in the past, but those that have been successful have been those who have taken the psychological need as well as the physical malady into account. EATING DISORDERS DEFINED Eating Disorders, which include such disorders as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder, include extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors surrounding weight and food issues. These emotional problems often translate into circumstances which end up taking the persons life. The mind/body connection has never been proven more than in the typical case of anorexia, bulimia or binge eating. Briefly, Anorexia Nervosa is when a person starves themselves in a determined fashion. They often lose more weight than in healthy, leaving them looking emaciated. Many who suffer from anorexia have an abnormal fear of being fat or being perceived as fat. Many of the more successful therapies address this underlying fear and use behavioral modification to redirect the negative self talk that many of these people engage in. Bulimia Nervosa is a combination of eating out of control and a purging much like the anorexic. Bulimics will pig out then feel intensely guilty about it later and will force themselves to rid their bodies, in whatever form or fashion is available, of the food.
