Essay / Research Paper Abstract

3 pages in length. Family and motherhood can be two very overwhelming aspects of an individual's life; even when things are going well and without incident, the responsibilities inherent to child upbringing and maintaining an intact family can be quite a challenge. For some women, however, the task of raising another human being instills a sense of desperation and hopelessness that can drive them away in the search for peace of mind. For others, spousal abuse creates an unlivable situation and the only way for the woman to survive is to leave her home and baby behind. Still others are incapable of financially affording what it costs to raise a child and must hand over the baby to family, friends or the welfare system in order for the child to have any chance at a decent life. Clearly, the notion of motherhood may revolve around a fairytale-like feeling at the outset, however, when the honeymoon period wears off and the reality of the situation emerges, some mothers believe they have no other choice but to leave. The recent "safe haven" law Michigan instituted is a perfect example of how alarming the prevalence of runaway mothers truly is. Failing to realize the broad spectrum of this opportunity, the states lawmakers allowed children up to the age of 18 to be left at any hospital; the onslaught of "children" in their adolescent years caught officials off guard and sent them scrambling to revise the law to include only infants. This was also a lesson for other states offering or considering the implementation of safe haven laws and the implications associated with them. ...These laws may exacerbate infant abandonment by encouraging women who may otherwise have chosen an adoption or kinship care plan...Safe haven laws enable individuals with no legal rights to abandon babies without the mothers consent and deprive biological fathers of their legal right to care for their children (American Public Welfare Association, 2003). ...
