displays a maturity beyond her years. In Act I scene iii, Shakespeare pictures Romeo has mooning over a girl, Rosaline, who has rebuffed his interest. Romeo proclaims Rosaline as
a paragon among women. Shakespeare also establishes Romeo as a great reader of love poetry and there is the implication that his attraction to Rosaline results from Romeos trying to
create himself the feelings that he has read about. This interpretation is substantiated Juliet, who tells Romeo after their first kiss that he "kisses by the book" (I.v.113), that
is, which suggests that he kisses according to rules or according to what he has read and not from genuine passion. Shakespeare emphasizes Juliets extreme youth. Early on, it
is established that she has not yet reached her fourteenth birthday. Yet, she is also shown to be a practical, level-headed girl. When her mother asks her to consider Paris
as a suitor, she states that she will consider him, but only insofar as her mother directs. "Ill look to like, if looking liking move:/But no more deep will I
endart mine eye/Than your consent gives strength to make it fly" (I.iii.97-99). In other words, Juliet is respectful towards her mothers wishes, without really promising any compliance. At the
