For all graphic design issues there are some general rules, it is these that are the subject of the two articles; "Graphic Design Principles: the keys to graphic success" and "What Do You Need to Know Before You Design Your Own Logo?" The first of these is taking a common sense approach but putting the general principles forwards as basic design rules. & basic ideas are presented those of balance, rhythm, unity, scale, proportion, emphasis and variety. Balance is described as needed to distribute the visual weight so that a design does not look uneven, this may be with symmetrical balance, or asymmetrical balance, where there is a tension or movement in the design that causes a feeling of balance. Rhythm and unity are linked together; these are the aspects of design that create cohesion so that the elements of the design look as if they belong together. Scale and proportion are also linked, scale will dictate the required proportion, and these are also needed for there to be balance. Emphasis is illustrated with the image of a bold black pair of scissors to show how emphasis will draw the eye and can be important in the way that the graphic design is perceived. Variety can be used to add interest and keep a design lively as well as helping to create harmony. This first article is written from a very generalized perspective and the rules can be applied to any area of operatic design. The images used look as if they are pages from a brochure or web page, but could be from any printed media form and are not specific to any particular genre, helping with the way that the ideas that are communicated can be applied. ...
