Islam. This paper considers this situation and whether or not the anomalies of these two diametrically opposed lifestyles can be reconciled. Discussion For people outside Islamic culture, treatment of women can seem barbarous. Yet we have to wonder if we have the right to dictate to others how they should live, particularly when their behavior is based on what they consider to be the holiest source of all: one of the worlds great faiths. Our first source is a Western clergyman, who explains the position of women is Islam, which is that of second class citizens. When we consider women in Islam, we are often confused because of the contrasts among them. Some are completely covered and others wear entirely Western dress (Bass, 2005). The style of dress the women wear may be a reflection of their beliefs, or the beliefs of their families. For example, a woman wearing a burkah, which covers her head to toe, may be part of the "radical, militant ideal" in which a womans primary function is to bear children (Bass, 2005). Anything other activity was strictly forbidden with the effect that over the centuries, these women became more and more isolated, living in "small houses with limited social contacts" (Bass, 2005). The lives of these women contrast markedly with the Muslim women of the cities, who may wear the latest Paris fashions (Bass, 2005). Bass approaches the discussion by comparing the attitudes towards women as found in the Bible and the Quran. According to Bass, "Islam teaches the inherent inferiority of women - instructively, the Quran, in suras 4 and 7, accounts for the creation of Adam at the hand of God, but not Eve, personally, as woman" (Bass, 2005).
