Pedro Paramo, Juan Preciado goes off on a journey to the southern Mexican desert town of Comala. However, the journey Rulfo takes his readers on is more metaphysical than physical. After arriving in Comala, Preciado and his readers have difficulty in separating the real from the surreal. Everything becomes a blur of images, voices, and in this complicated literary tapestry, reality and illusion become intermingled. The Comalans seem to be a devoutly religious people who spend the majority of their lives either in prayer or an almost desperate search for the afterlife that will somehow validate their misery. But upon closer examination, the town is permeated by avarice, debauchery, and a collective lack of morality. How can this be? These people attend confession and church regularly, and yet neither seems to have any measurable effect on their behavior. They are like programmed robots that give the impression of believing but the gestures are ultimately hollow. The significance of religion and spirituality beyond pomp, circumstance, and lip service is at the thematic core of Pedro Paramo. The readers, like Juan, become immediately struck by the shared cynicism of the townspeople. There is no hopefulness here in Comala; instead, the air is heavy with an oppressive guilt that is positively stifling. It soon becomes readily apparent that Comala is a ghost town, literally speaking. The ghosts overpower and overwhelm all mortals who pass through the town: "Theres so many of them, and so few of us, we dont even try to pray for them so their souls can rest. Our prayers wouldnt be enough for all of them. Perhaps a bit of the paternoster might reach them, but it wouldnt do them any good" (Rulfo 65). There ...
