This is a 4 page paper discussing reading software programs for use in the classroom. Review studies and recommended programs are included in the paper. Within the last several years, software learning programs have gradually been introduced into school curriculums to aid teachers in meeting the educational requirements of students. Since the introduction of reading software intended for classroom use, many school systems have taken it upon themselves to review the available products and integrate those with the highest ratings into the classrooms. Reading software programs are available from a variety of sources but today most have been reviewed based on curriculum needs and many have received high marks in the classrooms from the educators and the students and in addition to providing a new approach to curriculum requirements, students also learn to become comfortable with the new technology. Reading software programs are available from a variety of sources but today most have been reviewed based on curriculum needs and many have received high marks in the classrooms from the educators and the students and in addition to providing a new approach to curriculum requirements, students also learn to become comfortable with the new technology. One of the many educational systems to have completed this review of software and integrate the programs into the classrooms was a network affiliated with the University of Kansas entitled "Learning Generations" which was federally funded (Wyatt, Zook and Sieve, 2002). The University of Kansas formed a cohort consisting of its own education professors and students along with teachers and students from local school districts to assess all of the software reading programs (and other subjects as well). When looking at new software programs, the cohort referred to the "Childrens Software Revue" which was the best organized tool and allowed them to look at several key aspects of the reading software, such as: "Can a child in my class use this program with minimal support?; Is the program developmentally appropriate?; What can a student learn from this program and are these skills and information important to the curriculum objectives?; Will the program engage the child in the learning experience?; What features of the program enhance its functionality (i.e., printing capabilities, tracking students, speech capacity, etc.)?"
