of the project manager appears to be bringing the project in on schedule and within budget, but that event is only the result of successful attainment of the real goal of project management: to build a cohesive force that dedicates itself to achieving its stated objective. The group should practice open and "real" communication so that problems can be resolved as quickly and as efficiently as possible, and so solutions can emerge from the problems that are certain to arise. This is the real problem of the scenario case. Though Nick was able to see the project through to its completion, not only was he unable to build a cohesive team, he never knew that was his primary objective as project manager. The case unfortunately presents a highly realistic scenario. Greater realism could have been achieved only with the teams failure to bring the project in on time. Critique Was Nick a good project manager? Contrary to his own beliefs, Nick was not a good project manager at all. He was able to achieve the desired results largely through his own efforts, which would not have been possible had his expertise not lay in the software area in which the project had so much trouble. Communication is the key to building a successful project team. It is the responsibility of the project manager to ensure that everyone involved is on the same page. All project team members should have a clear idea of the end goals of the project and the reasons that certain processes are retained while others are abandoned or materially altered. ...
