The first consideration in planning a project is to define what that project it and what it needs to achieve, including ensuring that there is input for the end users who the project will benefit (Olle, et al, 1983). If we look at the different aspects of the projects such as lifecycle stages, the development of the process and the benefits of using software we can consider the difficulties and management of large IT projects. There are a number of approaches which can be developed in order to the different aspects of project management and stakeholder needs into account, one is the SEI (software engineering institutive model) which has been developed from the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) (Jones, 2000). This model states there are five main stages a project may go through. The first stage is where there are few standard processes, communication is ad hoc and there is no tracking system to keep a record of what has been done or by whom.
