the prejudices women face in the U.S. today. First, it considers prejudice in general; second, it discusses the idea of "womens work," and finally, the way in which society and culture combine to allow men to denigrate women, one of the last acceptable forms of prejudice. Discussion In general, things are better for women now than in the past, but there is nothing approaching equality for women in American society. Women do not enjoy the same power as men; the pay gap between men and women is more than 20% by most figures; and women are generally considered to be less competent than men, partly because they are considered to be more emotional and therefore incapable of making difficult decisions. Since men have the power in society, they are the ones who decide what is "normal" and they consistently define things to their own advantage. Ambition and aggressiveness in men are seen as desirable traits, making the man simply "hard charging" and a "good businessman." A woman who exhibits these same characteristics is "bitchy" or a "ball-buster." By persistently painting women who want to achieve success in these unflattering terms, men are able to discourage them and keep them from achieving the highest levels of power and position. It would be foolish to argue that women havent made progress, because they have, but it would also be foolish to pretend that they have achieved equality or that the struggle is over. Part of the problem is that sexism has gone underground, just as racism has. Men are now aware that its inappropriate to discriminate against people because of gender, so they do it in more subtle ways, mostly by creating a society in which women are found to be less competent and those who assert themselves, less than women.
