level of the educational spectrum. One of the conclusions of a great deal of research is that technology can help students learn (Mart?nez-Jim?nez et al., 2006). Information technologies, like computer applications and the Internet can present problems and situations to students that they will encounter in life outside the classroom (Mart?nez-Jim?nez et al., 2006). This technology can provide simulations and virtual laboratories, among other things (Mart?nez-Jim?nez et al., 2006). The technology allows the instructor to present scenarios and experiences for the student that would otherwise be impossible to present (Mart?nez-Jim?nez et al., 2006). Sportsman and colleagues (2009) discussed the fact that the entire health care environment has become so complex that there are concerns about "developing and maintaining the competency of registered nurses in both practice and education" (Sportsman et al., 2009, p. 67). These authors point out that there is a shortage not only of nurses but of nurse educators and that makes it very difficult to assure the continuing competencies of each nurse (Sportsman et al., 2009). The authors describe a Regional Simulation Center that was jointly sponsored by a community college, hospital and university that is intended to meet the challenges associated with nurse competency (Sportsman et al., 2009). This Center has three levels of simulations: "low-fidelity, moderate-fidelity, and high-fidelity" (Sportsman et al., 2009, p. 67). Low-fidelity are introductory, moderate-fidelity are a bit more real and high-fidelity mimics a real human patient and is the one this Center has (Sportsman et al., 2009). The simulations provide practice for the nurse while they also act as an evaluation process to determine the nurses level of competency (Sportsman et al., 2009). Another area in nursing where simulations are used frequently is for training rural nurses. Molinari, Monserud, and Hudzinski (2008) report that it is difficult for rural nurses ...
