as importantly, they affect profitability. Importance of Good Writing In a 2004 study conducted on
how the financial success of newspapers tied into the profitability of the various newspaper organizations, Leo Bogart found no correlation between quality writing and whether the newspaper was a financial
success. However, in the 2002 study conducted by Lynne M. Sallot, the author found a direct correlation between the readers interest in public relations materials and the style of writing
employed. "Communication style" was rated the highest of all indicators at .79 (motivation to read). Professional style of writing was rated at a lesser percentage (.62).
The student may note that while profitability is always a consideration, the question raised is what constitutes quality writing. What a reader in the current research
considers "professional" writing can be tied to other issues, such as being unbiased. Ortiz (2004) states that "no definitive studies exist, but
a 2000 report by the Wall Street Journal noted that 80 percent of businesses surveyed believe their employees biggest problem is written communication. Based on this, Ortiz discussed the topic
of quality business writing with several experts, including Linda Vanderwold, founder of VanWrite, a Sacramento consulting firm specializing in boosting a businesss bottom line. All of the business writing experts
