Ehrenreich (1997) conducted a study to determine the core content of personality theory and found: discussions of psychoanalytic theory such as Freud, Jung, Adler, Erikson, sometimes Horney; learning theory including Skinner and Bandura; humanistic theory including Rogers and Maslow and dispositional theories as viewed by Allport, Eyesenck and others. He also found there were three distinct bodies of knowledge relative to personality theory: the study of individual differences, including cognitive-behaviorists; clinical mental health theories; and social processes. Learning theorists were not considered to be part of the personality development domain. Nonetheless, this essay intends to compare and contrast the theories of three theorists who are definitely considered part of the personality development arena: Freud, Horney, and Maslow, and one theorist whose work focused primarily on cognitive development: Piaget. Piaget did do some work on moral development and we shall discuss his work in this vein. Of the theorists named, Freud is by far the most well-known for his work in the development of the individual. While Freud did not invent the idea of the conscious and unconscious mind, he was certainly the one who popularized them and used them as a key concept in his theories of personality development. The conscious mind is what the individual is aware of at any given moment. This would include perceptions, thoughts, fantasies, feelings, memories and whatever else. The preconcious works closely with the conscious mind; this is the part of the mind that offers memory and that can make anything conscious.
