Osama bin Ladens name was the first to come to mind for Americans who followed world events. But most remained baffled as to why a man-a wealthy man, a man
whose father was a close friend of our good friend the king of Saudi Arabia, an intelligent and deeply religious man-would hate the United States at all, much less to
hate it so much that he would perpetrate what has been labeled the most barbarous outrage against American citizens on American soil. The answer to that question is both simple
and complicated, much like the man himself. The roots of bin Ladens conflict with the United States can be found in the formation of Saudi Arabia itself. Few in the
West realize that the country, widely held up as a "moderate" Muslim state, was actually the birthplace of the ultra-fundamentalist Wahabi sect of the Sunni Muslims. As the story goes,
the founder of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed Ibn Saud, made a pact with the founder of the sect, Mohammed Ibn Abdul Wahab, that if he and his Bedoin tribesmen would support
him in founding his new country, he would dedicate it to the Wahabi faith (Masoud, 1998). Saudi kings since that time have treaded a thin line. The royal family has
been known to imbibe alcohol, hang out with loose women and gamble, but all these things are strictly forbidden in the country. And though giving lip service to the principles
