In 2005, drunk driving accidents claimed the lives of nearly seventeen thousand people, which according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration equates to thirty-nine percent of the entire number of annual traffic fatalities for that year (U.S. DOT Releases 2005 Data). A sobering statistic when one considers the number of intoxicated people who get behind the wheel each and every day. A common denominator among them all is how they all think they are in complete control and can operate a two thousand pound vehicle with the same reactionary skill as when they are sober when nothing could be further from truth. These figures are even more daunting when one considers the fact that deaths and injuries caused by alcohol-impaired drivers are one-hundred percent preventable. There is, perhaps, nothing more eye opening to the brevity of life than witnessing - or being victim to - an automobile accident, particularly when such a catastrophe is caused by a drunk driver. Not only does it immediately wrench one from the idle comfort that inconspicuously shields people from such harsh reality but if that accident proves fatal to the vehicles driver or passengers, it also makes one realize that the fight against allowing drunk drivers on the road is still a losing battle.
