been an ordinary man living and working the Northeast. In fact, he lived in New York , but his stint as slave would take place in Louisiana. Northup introduces the
story as follows: "Having been born a freeman, and for more than thirty years enjoyed the blessings of liberty in a free State--and having at the end of that time
been kidnapped and sold into Slavery, where I remained, until happily rescued in the month of January, 1853, after a bondage of twelve years--it has been suggested that an account
of my life and fortunes would not be uninteresting to the public" (Northup, 2000, 17). Northup is correct. His tales are very interesting and his book reads quite well.
This author has a unique and compelling writing style which takes the reader through the pages quite rapidly. Northups explanation of the redeeming qualities in slave owners, such as in
William Ford, is comforting. Most of the stories in this work suggests that slavery is the horrid institution that it is often depicted. Yet, other works such as the Frederick
Douglass autobiography depict a watered down look at the institution of slavery. Aside from the presence of Ford, there are few other positive influences for the slaves and one can
say that Solomon Northups account is truly dismal. Northup was however not owned by Ford and his own owner was quite violent. Northup would receive the stereotypical beatings. Yet, Ford
was a good influence in the region and actually did help Northup himself with his owner, at last to an extent. The twelve years spent as a slave had been
marked by violence and negativity, but Northups spirit would get him through those difficult days and nights. It only took a brief contact to his old town in New
