were better at interpreting non-verbal communication than men. The traditional interpretation of this ability is the linking of the skills with social tasks such as child rearing, where communication by a child during infancy requires these skills due to infants lacking verbal dexterity. However, many of these surveys were undertaken many years ago, and social norms have changed. Men are becoming more involved in child rearing and being exposed to the circumstances where these skills are required and can develop. The hypothesis of this paper is that men are becoming better at reading non verbal signals. This paper will focus on facial expressions and assesses the skills of a range of men and women in interpreting facia expressions. The study used a written survey with demographic questions, self assessment questions and four photographs where respondents were asked to identify facial expressions. The sample size was 50, made up of 22 males and 28 females. One survey was returned uncompleted. For all statistics quoted I have included the table taken from SPSS for the students reference.
