In the following paper we examine the issues of ethnicity, or culture, the role of men and women, corruption, and revolution as it involves each country and their history. Each country is discussed separately and then a comparison and contrast follows. Nigeria Prior to 1914 Nigeria, as a named country, did not exist. The people who resided in what is now know as Nigeria were divided into four different empires. There was the Northern Empire, the Calabar Kingdom, the Oduduwa Empire, and the Benin Empire. "In the 1800s, the British started to reside in parts of these kingdoms and empires. In 1914, Nigeria was formed by combining the Northern and Southern Protectorates and the Colony of Lagos" (O., 2002; history.html). From this information we can readily understand that ethnicity and tribal boundaries were perhaps very strong as each of the kingdoms possessed a slightly different culture. And, with the coming of the British and colonialization these people were forcefully brought together. "Between 1914 and 1922, Nigeria was presided over by a Governor-General. In 1922, as part of the constitution of the time, the British introduced the principle of direct election into the Legislative council" (O., 2002; history.html). There appears to be little information which indicates that the tribal peoples were at battle with one another, but clearly they were at the hands of the overpowering British. In better understanding some of the cultural and gender conditions of this time we look at womens positions before and after colonialization.
