2007). Statistics is a tool that is used to make sense of large sets of numbers, it helps us both use and understand different types of information. Most often, statistics is presented in terms of different types of probability factors or averages or in any number of other ways. It can tell us the most frequent response on a question, for instance, or it can tell us about the average consumer who purchases Kraft cheese. Statistics are commonly used to discuss crime rates, drug use, graduation rates, and just about any other topic. Even the weather broadcaster gives us probability factors, e.g., there is a 20 percent chance of rain. It is not a perfect field and to overcome the imperfections of any research results, we will read or hear about standard deviations or a band of confidence. Many journalists announcing or writing results of a poll might say something like "the average score was 10 plus or minus 2 points," meaning that there is a four point spread. We seem to have gotten into the habit of accepting statistical results as always accurate, valid and true but that is a false assumption. The fact is that statistics can be skewed to say whatever it is we want to say. More than a decade ago, Professor Taflinger (1996) recommended people ask specific questions before simply accepting the data reported: exactly who did the study, what are the statistics measuring, who was included in the study, how did the participants participate or how were they asked the questions, and what is being compared?
