The Civil War was one of the bloodiest times in American history. It was a war fueled by many separate yet
interrelated issues, a war which led to the separation of North and South and even the separation of families as brother fought against brother and son against father. Perceptions
of the war too varied according to a number of factors. These included socioeconomic status and, of course, race. These perceptions are reflected in many aspects of our
history. One of these most interesting aspects is literature. Two writers in particular provide interesting perceptions on the Civil War. These writers are Frederick Douglass and Nathaniel
Hawthorne, men who were as separated in their societal backgrounds as they were in their race, men who had no qualms about expressing themselves both in person and in their
writings. These writings provide us with distinct views into an underlying issue of Nineteenth Century society, the underlying quest for freedom which resulted not only in the Civil War
but also in significant strife in several diverse aspects of this society. The Civil War came replete with very definite opinions on the
war and the factors behind it which interlaced the everyday lives of both the common citizens and the most powerful in nineteenth century society. Frederick Douglass and Nathaniel Hawthorne
were two of these people. Just as their societal backgrounds vary so too do their opinions on the war. As would be expected, Frederick Douglass approaches the topic
