those stories that require a third person narrator for they, more often than not, provide a very objective perspective that allows us to see many different characters and develop our own theories or assessments of the events. In other stories it seems that it is necessary to have a first person narrative for the story is largely about them and how they develop and grow through a particular time period in their life. In Sinclair Ross story "As For Me and My House" the narrator, Mrs. Bentley, is the narrator. She is not necessarily telling us a story but rather putting down her own thoughts in a journal. The following paper examines the power of this form of narrative in Ross narrative, examining whether it is a good choice, the best choice, or a bad choice. Narrative in "As For Me and My House" First and foremost it should perhaps be understood that this story was originally created to be narrated in first person. If the author had made the original choice to tell it from a third persons perspective it would not have been the same story. An Authors choice in narrative voice is what ultimately makes the story what it is. As such to argue that the story written from a different perspective would have been worse, or better, is to ignore the fact that with a different form of narrative it would have ultimately been a different story with a different theme and intent. In light of this we must first understand that it is all but impossible to claim if another narrative voice would have done better, for with another narrative voice it would have been a completely different story.
