Hunter, 2002). The Muslim presence in France predates that of Germany (or the UK) due to the extensive French colonial possession in Muslim Africa. Prior to its independence in 196, Algeria was actually considered to be, not a colony, but an extension of France (Leveau and Hunter, 2002). In 1952, the French National Office of Immigration placed the number of Muslims living in France to be at 500,000 (Leveau and Hunter, 2002). The nature of the Muslim community of immigrants in France differs from elsewhere in Europe due to three principal reasons: 1. the particular nature of the French concept of secularism (laicite), which is more strict than in other European countries and even has anti-religion dimensions; 2. the close and complex relationship between France and its ex-colonies, especially Algeria; and 3. assimilationist tendencies in France, which have traditionally been very strong (Leveau and Hunter, 2002, pp. 3-4). Due to this last characteristic, the perceived "inability" or "unwillingness" of Muslims to completely assimilate themselves in to French society has been difficult for the rest of the populace to accept (Leveau and Hunter, 2002). In the last few years, however, attitudes have begun to change as it has become clear that Muslim population n France is not transitory, but a permanent feature. There is the realization that French Muslims will endeavor to maintain a hybrid character that retains loyalty to their religion, but also wishes to engage more fully with the social and political life of their country of residence (Leveau and Hunter, 2002).
