The following paper examines some of these realities through a discussion of "Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter" by Chitra Divakaruni. The paper examines this story and then discusses it in relationship to two other short stories involving the East and West relations: "Swaddling Clothes" by Yukio Mishima and "Crickets" by Robert Olen Butler. Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter Chitra Divakaruni was born in India and resided there until 1976 when she came to the United States and furthered her studies in English (Chitra Divakaruni). She is an acclaimed poet and author and has won many awards (Chitra Divakaruni). "Her work is widely known, as she has been published in over 50 magazines, including the Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker, and her writing has been included in over 30 anthologies" (Chitra Divakaruni). In addition, her works have been translated into many different languages which include Japanese and Dutch (Chitra Divakaruni). She generally writes about cultural change and the difficulties associated with such change and presently teaches "in the nationally ranked Creative Writing program area at the Univ. of Houston and divides her time between Houston and Northern California" (Chitra Divakaruni). When this story was first published "India was highly visible in the international arena for the cultural conflict among its religious groups, its nuclear weapons tests, and its ongoing border dispute with Pakistan" (eNotes).
