clearly has the stature of a mythological character. Some scholars picture Moses as being essentially a narrative embodiment of the Torah. That is, they emphasize that in the majority of the biblical tales in which Moses appears, he never transcends his function of being a "peg upon which to hang this or that legal precedent" (Price, 1999, p. 24). As this opinion suggests, there is a continuing controversy concerning the historical Moses versus the narrative creation of Moses. Whether or not the historical Moses can be reconstructed from analysis of biblical narrative and other sources remains a topic for heated debate among biblical and historical scholars. However, while accounts of Moses in the Bible have a mythical character, Carciente, et al (2002) assert that this does not preclude that Moses could also have been an historical character, as traditions concerning historical personalities can take on mythical connotations over time. But, on the other hand, how this historical persona is interpreted varies a great deal from scholar to scholar. For example, there are those who take the position that Moses was an Egyptian by birth, not by adoption as indicated in the Bible (Wolf, 2000). These scholars connect the historical Moses and his monotheism with Amarna revolution of Akhenaten, the ruler who renounced the many gods of Egypt in favor of the sun god as the only deity (Wolf, 2000). This position holds that Moses brought with him into exile the one god of Akhenaten and forced monotheism on the Hebrew people in their exodus from Egypt (Wolf, 2000). Other scholars assert a more traditional interpretation of historical sources. According to the Torah, Moses was the person to whom Gods Law was given.
