to colonise the new world, relied particularly on their superiority in terms of science and technological development, not only in terms of their pragmatic ability to explore and conquer, but also their promulgation of that ideology as superior to that of the lands which they invaded. The focus is not so much, in Adas work, on the developments and new inventions themselves, but on the impact which they had on the attitude of Europe towards the colonies, and the way in which scientific and technological superiority was translated into moral and political superiority and control. The dichotomy between the ideologies of European and non-European cultures was, effectively, dictated by issues of technological competence and advancement. Adas makes the point that in his view, evidence of such competence and advancement has been used by both Europeans and North Americans to the disadvantage of other cultures. He states, for instance, that it legitimised the ideological stance which asserted the superiority of white races over others and also allowed science and technology to dominate the way in which the validity of other cultures was defined. He notes, for example, that "the application of technological and scientific gauges of human potential . . . has also vitally affected Western policies regarding education and technological diffusion which go far to explain the varying levels of underdevelopment in the Third World today" (p. 15).
