The value of statistics is the way on which they appear to be objective facts, but the trust in that there is a potential to use them in order to create misleading messages. In scientific research there are specific processes that are used to reach conclusion with the use of hypothesis testing and scientific method. The main approach is to try and use statistical testing to disprove a theory, using accepted methods, and it is only if there is the inability to disprove the hypothesis that it is accepted. Issues considered in this approach include the level of certainty that is needed and the way that errors can manifest. However, the way statistics are used in many other contexts there is not the same understanding on the part of the audience and there is the potential to use figures in a misleading way. A good example of this may be seen with the way that averages are used. In most cases this is the mean, this is calculated by taking all of the values of the population and then dividing it by the size of the population. In some instances this may be a useful statistic, but it can be misleading. For example, when looking at a group of people it is possible to give an average ages, but this tells us little about the actual group themselves (Curwin and Slater, 2007). For example, it may be argued that as the mean age of a group of people is 45, there may be not need to supply services needed by the retired population or fore the over 65s.
