have also been accusations of anti-Semitism in Gibsons portrayal of the last twelve hours of the life of Jesus Christ. The following examination of this film looks at the ways
in which the film parallels gospel accounts of Christs betrayal, arrest, interrogation, torture and crucifixion, as well as ways in which the film deviates from these accounts, adding scenes that
have no basis in scripture. First of all, the film presents an air of authenticity because the actors playing Jewish roles speak in Aramaic, and those playing Romans speak
in Latin, in each case this dialogue is accompanied by English subtitles. While Latin was certainly a language of the ancient world and John 19:20 says that the inscription placed
above Jesus head was written in Aramaic, Greek and Latin, scholars agree that that the common language of ancient Palestine was not Latin, but Greek (Longhenry, 2004). Furthermore, the Latin
that the Roman soldiers use is the Latin of the Roman Catholic Church (Longhenry, 2004). This is "obvious because the letter c is not pronounced as a k, as it
would have been in the first century CE" (Longhenry, 2004). As this suggests, in many ways, the theology presented in the film reflects the traditional Roman Catholic viewpoint of Gibson
as director. This Catholic perspective is also quite evident in the fact that Mary, the mother of Jesus, is the most prevalent character in the film except for Jesus
himself. While John 19:25 indicates that Mary was present at the crucifixion, nowhere in the gospels is there any indication that Mary played such a prominent role in Jesus last
