them becomes a part of the American experience. But the truth is that advertisements can do harm. People are bombarded with advertisements involving sex. They see the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue on stands, and advertised all over the media, and whenever there is any skin shown, it makes it to Yahoos most viewed pictures on the Internet. Of course, these are not even the advertisements for which there is controversy, which suggests that media is saturated with sex and an idealization of beauty. One problem is that sex in and of itself is not negative. In fact, sex enhances life and makes it interesting. For most people, sex is a good thing. Then, why are the sexual undertones to come from ads so dangerous? According to Kilbourne (2004) "sex in advertising is more about disconnection and distance than connection and closeness" (p.456). One can begin to see the problem. For people, sex is supposed to be aligned with long term relationships. The objectification of the human body is something that many find distasteful and some believe detracts from the culture. The author goes on to relate the use of sex in advertising with pornography and contends that the ads are about power (Kilbourne, 2004). Many people do not like to see women exploited on television, but they reason that it is not all that bad, and that they can handle the ads. They really are not affected by the tone of the ads or their messages. Like ducks, they can allow the intent of the ads to fly off their backs and they are unscathed. Of course, children are another matter. Children are affected by advertisements and integrate the way that women are treated into their own lives.
