people to work. What are the circumstances which lead to the development of the labor movement? In Marxs view, the workers would eventually rise up and take control. The workers
would feel alienated and this would be their impetus towards such a movement. What is the essential function of the labor movement in a capitalist economy? For Marx, capitalism is
the enemy, even though to an extent it is found in his paradigm of historical materialism. Essentially, capitalism was supposed to create wealth so eventually states could support a degree
of socialism and then finally create a communist outcome. What is the relationship between political and economic activities of unions, if any? For Marx and Engels, trade unions were limited
in what they could do (Hyman, 1971). For instance, due to "the restricted economic power attributed to trade unionism, Marx and Engels considered its political potential to be highly significant"
(1971, 39). Marx attached a great deal of political significance to the trade unions (Lovosky, 1935). Is the labor movement (or, are unions) favorable or antagonistic to capitalism? Unions are
clearly antagonistic towards capitalism and this is true in a general sense. Of course, because Marx clearly was against capitalism as an end, one can say that under this model,
