Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction Middlemarch by George Eliot is a close examination of life in an English village in the 19th century; Things Fall Apart is Chinua Achebes look at life in an African village at approximately the same time. But the two books are very different. This paper considers the male gender roles as portrayed in these works. Discussion Although there are a great many characters in Middlemarch who "rotate" in and out of the spotlight as Eliot pays attention to each of them, its Dorothea Brooke who seems to dominate the book. She is an unconventional character, to say the least: kind but determined, and a passionate advocate for social reform. This makes her a far cry from the sort of woman being presented in literature at the time, and this in turn makes her presence loom large in the book. However, she makes a mistake in marrying her first husband, the Reverend Edward Casaubon, and this mistake gives Eliot a chance to write realistically about marriage. She doesnt hesitate to show a woman stifled by a marriage that should never have taken place. Thus, readers can understand something of Dorothea by looking at her relationship with the most important man in her life, Casaubon. Casaubon is a would-be scholar, a man whose intellectual attainment is less than his hope and imagination makes it. He is trying to write the definitive work on mythology-he calls it the "key" to all mythology, and he is attempting to encompass this huge ...
