or powerful influence with literature. In "Death of a Salesman" we see a story that is filled with the life and perspective of men, but we also see a woman who seems to hold it all together. With "The Glass Menagerie" we have the story of a man and his sister, who wants a man. At the same time, however, the story is about a woman who has raised these children in a mans world. In the following paper we examine these two stories and the strong female characters within. The paper examines, and then compares and contrasts, Linda from "Death of a Salesman" and Amanda from "The Glass Menagerie." Linda As one author notes, ""Lindas character is the opposite of Wily Lomans. She never expects to be loved by anyone" and she really does not appear to need their love or acceptance for "she is the one who gives love to everyone - her husband, her children" (OBrien Biography.asp?ID=136). In this many would argue that she is a typical female who gives herself completely to her family until there is nothing left of herself. But, with Linda her family is her identity. This is not wrong, it simply is. And in her family she is strong and dependent for she "She breathes with motherly tenderness and love for all, for life itself. And Linda has a heart full and hands outstretched to give back to life the love it gives her" (OBrien Biography.asp?ID=136). She is strong enough to allow any personal needs she may have to be put aside, for she is happy enough and confident enough not to need anything more than she has.
