Downsizing and lean operations dont mix, because a company that wants to implement the process needs total commitment from its workforce. The good news is that a company using lean manufacturing often experiences an increased growth rate, and these employees can be absorbed into the expanded operation (Teed, 2005). This paper discusses this "latest big thing," what it is, who uses it, and how and why its implemented. Why Go Lean? Its no secret that globalization has brought about an enormous shift in the way companies do business. New markets have opened up, and concerns that once had the market "cornered" have suddenly found themselves competing with newcomers located thousands of miles away. In order to remain in the race, companies have had to learn new ways of doing things. For years now, Total Quality Management (TQM) has been one of the most popular styles for restructuring company methodologies, but it appears that TQM has been surpassed by lean manufacturing. The standard way of doing things is mass production, which started with Henry Ford and the first assembly line, if not before. It involves breaking down manufacturing processes into a series of steps, which are done individually by workers in a particular order. Such mass production models "use organizational hierarchies that could have been borrowed from medieval princes: the strict following of orders by untrained soldiers.
