This paper analyzes Lady Macbeths character and compares her with todays woman. Discussion The first time we see Lady Macbeth, shes reading a letter that Macbeth has sent her, describing his meeting with the witches on the heath in which they prophesied that he would be king (Shakespeare). Her immediate reaction to this news is that he is too kind to "catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be great, / Art not without ambition, but without / The illness should attend it" (I.iv.17-19). In other words, she is afraid that he is too kind-hearted to take the most direct route to the throne, which is to murder the present king. The word illness here is defined as "wickedness," so we know already that we are in the presence of someone utterly ruthless, who will do whatever she deems necessary to attain the ends she seeks. Ambition is the keynote of her character, and while Macbeth is also ambitious, his desire for the kingship doesnt match hers. Many scholars have wondered why it is that he is so under her spell that she can convince him to commit one of the worst crimes of all, the murder of his liege lord, and under his own roof. One of the oldest of all human social laws is that a person cannot harm his guest. Its never been written down, but it comes from antiquity and is generally acknowledged as one of those things that is part of humanity: a person is safe within the walls of his host. But here, Macbeth is about to turn that ancient law upside down. There must be a compelling reason.
