the power and the decisive entity within any given story. They, as men, are often seen as part man and part god, even if the god part is only symbolical through their control of events and people. Two men who fall into these descriptions are Kurtz, from Joseph Conrads novel "Heart of Darkness," and the character of Gilgamesh in the Epic of Gilgamesh. The following paper examines how they are both seen as man-gods. The character of Kurtz is examined from the film "Heart of Darkness" as well as the novel. Kurtz and Gilgamesh In first examining the relationship between the two men, it should be noted that the film version of Conrads novel is a very accurate interpretation so much of what is stated relates to the film. However, specific quotes are taken from the novel itself. With that in mind we look at Kurtz first. Kurtz was perhaps much like Marlow when he first arrived in the region, Marlow being an idealistic young man. He was perhaps a simple man with noble ideals, but yet a lack of enlightenment about the truths behind Imperialism and the native people. Kurtz wanted the ivory trade to become an institution of hope for the natives, and not something which merely oppressed and used the natives. Kurtz is a man who is very diverse and very intelligent. He is a powerful speaker, a poet, a writer, an artist, a musician, an obvious political power and a very powerful businessman. At the same time, however, he has become a man without integrity and without morals. He has become a "hollow man" (Conrad NA).
