Von Huben 11/2010 Please Introduction Kaoru Ishikawa was an early proponent of the system known as "Total Quality Management" or TQM. This paper is a brief biography of Ishikawa, his key ideas; how he has influenced quality practices around the world; how his ideas fit into the TQM paradigm; and the implications of his ideas for the future. Discussion Total quality management is actually a very simple idea: in fact it seems so obvious it takes a genius to think of it. The idea is that everyone who works in a company should enjoy their jobs but more than that, they should all be part of the ongoing effort to make the company competitive and profitable. Its a "were all in this together" mentality and it means that everyone is on board with the companys philosophy, direction and operation; theyre all working toward the same goal. Obviously when this is the case, things are much smoother than when various employees, for whatever reason, start trying to do things that are out of step with the companys overall goals. Snapshot: Ishikawa was born in 1915 and graduated from Tokyo University with a degree in engineering; he went on to obtain a doctorate in the field (Sallis, 2005). He became a professor at his alma mater in 1960 and won the Deming Prize for his work on total quality control (Sallis, 2005).
