gives us a fairly good look at Roman life and the problems Caesar faced as a leader. This paper considers how critics might look at Caesar and todays societal issues. Discussion In the play, Shakespeare gives us a portrait of a great leader who nevertheless has a huge blind spot: he doesnt see the fairly obvious plot that will claim his life. He also shows us a model of the faithful friend in Marc Antony; and in the devoted wife, Calpurnia. But Caesar remains problematic, and its his failure to understand his danger that we can consider, with regard to any modern leadership position. There is even something called the "Julius Caesar Syndrome."1 The Julius Caesar Syndrome is characterized by tunnel vision or isolation, or a failure to listen to others; in the play, Caesar went to Rome on the Ides of March, 44 BC, "apparently unaware of a fully realized conspiracy to kill him there."2 The question is why this man, an intelligent, capable, well-liked politician and able military leader, didnt see it coming; "[A]fter all, Caesar was a superb military leader who understood that there were no victories without first-rate intelligence. Caesar should have realized that fateful morning that something was up."3 As Shakespeare tells the tale, there were warnings everywhere, from a lion running through the streets to a soothsayer telling him to "beware the Ides of March" to Calpurnias nightmare in which she actually saw his statute spouting blood.4 He loved and trusted his wife, and yet he ignored her pleas not to go to the senate that day, though he did at least hesitate for a moment.
