This 5 page paper examines some of Japan's policies in order to evaluate the statement that Japan will continue the active, assertive and nationalist stance it takes now with regard to its defense policy, foreign economic policy and diplomatic stance regarding its history. The paper finds that the statement is largely untrue since Japan is changing – or considering changing – all three of these policies; however, the terms "active, assertive and nationalist" will still apply. are many ways to handle these topics, but the easiest is probably to focus on each of the issues individually. The student can of course take them in any order,
but as the assignment is worded in the order of defense, economics and history, well follow that model. With regard to defense, the student will want to note that Japan
has been adamant about insuring that its forces are used only for self-defense; this is a key to this policy. He or she might find something like the following. Since
1976, and with the excesses of the war in mind, Japan has focused on self-defense (Tamaki, 2004). It has, in fact, become passionately devoted to the idea as it seeks
to repair the damage done its reputation by its fierce attacks on its neighbors throughout the region in the 1930s and 1940s. A report issued in 2004 notes that the
security of Japan is "closely related to peace and stability in the whole of Northeast Asia" and that that security "will continue to depend on the deterrence capability of the
