to such an extent that the leading manufacturer of top-quality Western-style musical instruments is a Japanese firm (Futoransky 38). Japanese instrumentalists, conductors and soloists occupy prominent positions in concert halls
all over the world. The term "music" has come to be synonymous with Western music in Japan to the point that traditional forms are qualified with the word "Japanese," in
order to avoid misunderstandings with the public (Futoransky 38). In Japans major cities on nearly any evening, one can choose from any number of musical performances. Its possible to hear
the best of classical Western music from major orchestras in halls that seat 2,000, or jazz or rock in a more intimate atmosphere. Simultaneously, it is also possible to hear
traditional Japanese music performed, as this music continues to occupy a special place in the hearts of the Japanese people (ISEI PG). Although, for awhile it looked as if traditional
forms of music had disappeared. During the 1960s, there was a period were traditional forms seemed to go into eclipse (Futoransky 38). The study of traditional instruments such as the
shakuhachi, the koto and the shamisen has greatly increased in recent years. Nevertheless, traditional Japanese music accounts for no more than 10 percent of the musical activities performed in Japan
(Futoransky 38). A study of the history of Japanese music reveals that Japan has always appropriated the music of other cultures. Then, it has digested these forms and altered them
to fit Japanese tastes. The present preference for Western music is actually in perfect symmetry with the rest of Japanese musical history. Additionally, while Western music has gained a surprising
