During the 1800s and 1900s there were several immigration movements to come the United States, two of which were comprised of Italians and Irishmen. The Irish arrived first, but the Italian success in criminality was greater. It is true that the early Irish groups showed deadly force, and were quite dangerous, but the Italian Cosa Nostra lived and achieved an important status. The Mafia is quite powerful, and although some of the success has deteriorated, its notoriety lives on. In part, this seems to be attributable to the fact that the Italian immigrants came later than the Irish and had to fight with them for jobs. The Irish assimilated more efficiently and were more successful in the mainstream. Another reason for the power of the Italian groups goes to the fact that the Mafia originated in Italy. In La Cosa Nostra, although some prominent mobsters were known to be involved in organized crime, and few had doubts about their affiliation, being able to gather evidence against these criminals is very difficult. There may be witnesses who refuse to talk. In fact, because most witnesses realize that their lives could be threatened, a witness protection program had been created by the government. The program is well known, but expensive and difficult to administer. People in the program are relocated and their identities are well hidden. Revealing ones identity can be dangerous because the Mafia is a professional organization and has a far reach. The Witness Protection Program is good. However, many people do not want to be involved in a trial that will result in a change of identity ...
