the existence of man in his journey for truth and meaning. Issues such as justice, morality, and the condition of man are some of the many issues that can be found in many different types of texts. The following paper examines several issues as they are found in Platos Apology, Sophocles Antigone, The Book of Job, and The Trial by Franz Kafka. The paper is divided into the various issues, those issues being law, justice, crime, guilt, punishment, morality, and human nature. Law The issue of law can be seen from many different perspectives in the texts being examined. For example, in Antigones story we have a woman who fights, against the law, to have her brother rightfully buried. The law does not heed her wishes, for the most part. And, in addition, she is a woman and in the realm of law, a mans world, her voice has no power. Antigone tells Creon at one point: "Yes; for it was not Zeus that had published me that edict; not such are the laws set among men by the justice who dwells with the gods below; nor deemed I that thy decrees were of such force, that a mortal could override the unwritten and unfailing statutes of heaven" (Sophocles). In this she is arguing how she has not followed the laws of "men" or even of the gods in this case, but rather perhaps a higher law of righteousness and honor. This is something that Socrates would not have done, because he placed much of his faith, or actions, upon the laws of man, even to the point of accepting his death.
