Now, the adoption of information technology is no longer something which cutting edge organizations do in order to secure a competitive advantage; it is something which is fundamentally required of all organizations, in order to be competitive at all. In other words, it is now essentially a requirement. Even the smallest organizations stand to benefit greatly from adopting information technology systems, especially in the area of information management. This paper will explore the importance of this topic through a hypothetical example. This paragraph helps the student begin to introduce the hypothetical scenario. Adopting the following hypothetical scenario can be useful to facilitating a proper understanding of the value of information technology in even a small business context. Suppose that one were an independent technology consultant who had just been hired by Margaret Smith, the owner of a bookstore and coffee shop called JavaBooks. Previously, one had met Margaret during a networking event, and, upon hearing about her business model, immediately had thoughts about how to successfully integrate information technology into JavaBooks to increase its efficiency and profitability. Margaret was receptive to the idea. However, upon meeting with Margaret at JavaBooks, the nature of the business need for information technology became abundantly apparent. Margarets office was littered with books and papers of all sorts, from invoices and packing slips to tax notices, various announcements and advisories, charts and schedules. Upcoming meetings and important events were being tracked via a board with post-it notes chaotically strewn across its face.
