Iraq sits on one of the richest oil reserves, and by going in, the United States pretty much made sure it would have control of the reserves (at least, until it was announced that the oil belonged to the Iraqi people). But oil and politics make funny bedfellows -- unlike the typical product that stimulate supply and demand, oil is a commodity that defies any type of logical thinking. For one thing, there is little doubt that oil pretty much makes the world go around, and also makes the political machines go around. The United States, for example, plays a role, a military one that helps, for one thing, maintain "the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf . . . to oil-consuming countries around the world" (Mandelbaum 63). Yet this has Americans asking the obvious questions, namely why those oil-producing companies dont stand for themselves, and why the United States bears the burden of "cleaning up" these countries, when other countries, who depend so heavily on oil, dont safeguard it (Mandelbaum 63). One reason, notes MacNevin, is that the U.S. administration doesnt necessarily want it that way. It seems as though the U.S. seems to want control over much of the energy -- as evidenced by whats going on in Russia now. When Russian President Vladimir Putin arrested Michail Khodorkovsky, CEO of Russian oil company Yukos on charges of fraud and corruption, the U.S. Chevron-Texaco immediately stepped up to the plate to purchase the company (MacNevin).
