two distinct species of animals or plants. While hybridization can occur in the wild, it is quite rare. Hybrids are intentionally produced quite frequently in our contemporary world, however, in an attempt to explore the influence of genetics on a particular behavior or to produce a plant or animal that is better suited for a specific purpose than either of that plant or animals parent lines. This hybrid vigor or resonance makes hybridization a commonly employed technique in a number of applications. Much of the impetus for hybridization comes as a result of the fact that the worlds population is growing at a phenomenal rate. At the same time the lands which are available for agricultural production are shrinking. This leaves us with far too many people to feed and less and less area to do it with (Small, 1999, Anderson, 2005). The only hope in meeting this goal is to utilize the latest advancements in science which allow the genetic manipulation of the plant and animal species which comprise our food and technological innovations in pest control and other arenas of agriculture. This allows an intensification or resonance of usability. Hybrids can often grow in areas which wheat or other more traditional mainstays perform poorly. Cultivars can also be artificially manipulated to be more tolerant of temperature and other environmental extremes. A number of crops have been crossbred to increase productivity. Rye serves as one of the more interesting examples. Cross breeding has resulted in an increase in rye alleopathic qualities (Pester, 1998). Allelochemicals can be released in sufficient quantities from both living and decaying rye plants that weed seedlings are suppressed (Pester, ...
