tales; and the significance of two passages within the work. Glossary a) The Sasanid dynasty: Haddawy includes for his readers explanation of the term "Sasanid dynasty" to be
"a dynasty of Persian kings who ruled from A.D. 226 to 641" (Haddawy, 1990, p. 3). This is central to the setting of the story which involves the two kings
who were brothers during this time in the peninsulas of India and Indochina. The explanation of the Sasanid dynasty not only provides the time and the setting of the story
but also lends some credibility to the tales in that they have been retold for generations. b) Vizier: Haddawy includes an explanation of "vizier" within his prologue not only
because the term is not often heard today but because the vizier plays a particularly important part of the story. The kings vizier is "the highest state official or administrator
under a caliph or king" which literally means "one who bears burdens" (Haddawy, 1990, p. 3). The vizier plays an important role in this story as firstly he is the
one who has to put to death all of the Shahrayars wives the morning after they have slept with the Sultan and the viziers daughter, Shahrazad, requests that she be
able to marry the Sultan in order to spare all of the other virgins in the land the same perilous end. c) The
